Several other conditions relating to vascular health can lead to a purple or blue discoloration of the tongue.

Central cyanosis, which causes poor arterial oxygenation, is associated with clubbing and bluish discoloration of the mucous membranes, such as the tongue.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, cancers of the tongue may produce a dark red or purple color on surfaces in the mouth. A purple or bluish tongue could also signal a vitamin deficiency.
